On June 5th 1568, Lamoral count of Egmont and his friend the count of Horne were executed on Brussels’ Grand-Place. It was a tragic end for the nobleman but an event that made him famous. A successful general and rich count, statesman Lamoral had been appointed stadtholder of Flanders and Artois in the Spanish Netherlands. Notwithstanding his loyal service to the Spanish he was condemned to death for not having taken enough action against the protestants.  Lamoral literally lost his head on the scaffold…
