The Caesar festivities

Open Monuments Weekend is all about the Caesar Festivities this year. The festivities are organized only once every 25 years in Velzeke, a beautiful borough of Zottegem!

The Caesar festivities are organised in Velzeke once every 25 years. The history of the festivities goes back to the 19th century when newly founded Belgium was looking for historic heroes. In 1873 Velzeke used a harness to honour the Romans (and Julius Caesar). The inhabitants pledged to repeat the festivities every 25 years.

Indulge in a weekend full of Roman splendour

A centuria of Roman soldiers will march over the cobblestones of the Paddestraat towards Velzeke to set up camp. Emperor Hadrian will watch gladiators fight and the cavalry display and on Saturday night there is a big Celtic feast.

Various workshops and guided tours are organised at Velzeke archaeological museum ‘ArcheocentrumVelzeke’.
